Soccer, or as some people refer to it, football, is becoming a more and more popular sport. It is steadily becoming a way that many young children and overcoming obesity because the athleticism that is involved with soccer is outstanding and requires that the person constantly be running, jumping and basically active for the entire game. However, what many people do not focus on is the health issues that soccer players should prepare for.
The most common injury in soccer are those injuries that are related to the knee. Professional soccer players who make a living with the sport often find that after years of running and sudden stopping, they have torn the ACL in their knee. What does this mean? The ACL is what attaches the ligaments to the knee and makes it movable. When this breaks, the pain is doubling and the knee becomes unusable. The only repair for a full blown ACL tear is surgery. From then on, the person may always have pain in the knee or they may never be able to go back to the way that they were before the injury.
So how can this be prevented? We have always heard from growing up in Physical Education classes that warming up is essential to safe exercise and play. This still holds true for the sport of soccer. Those who play should make sure that they stretch the leg and the knee in order to prepare for the action that is sure to follow. Performing toe touches is one way to stretch the knee and make sure that it is not as susceptible to injury. As well as performing knee lift stands, and stretching the leg while sitting on the ground. You can also avoid injury by making sure that you stay in shape, whether it is soccer season or not. An athlete’s health is not limited to what they eat and drink, but also to how they take care of their body. If you are serious about your health, then you need to do whatever you can do in order to make sure that you do not bring on injury when it could have been prevented.
